CARBONDALE, Ill. — Four Salukis scored in double digits as the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team took down Drake University by the score of 73-65 on Sunday afternoon in Banterra Center. The win continues the Salukis' (15-7, 10-2) best start to conference play since the 2006-07 season. Sunday's victory also clinched a regular season sweep of the Bulldogs; the 2006-07 season was also the last time this occurred.
Sunday's matchup was Southern's fifth in 10 days; the Salukis exit that stretch 4-1 with the lone defeat being a one-point loss at Missouri State.
"We said going in that this week could make us or break us," said Stein. "I'm proud of our team coming out ready to practice every day and be sharp."
Graduate forward Gabby Walker notched a double-double for the Salukis, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Walker nearly achieved a double-double in the first half alone, finishing the first 20 minutes of play with nine points and 10 boards.
"Gabby was ready to go," said Stein. "She did a really good job today of putting us over the hump."
Alongside Walker atop the scoresheet was Makenzie Silvey with 18 points. Silvey shot 7-of-15 from the field for the game. Also scoring in double figures were Abby Brockmeyer with 16 points, and Quierra Love with 10. Love also posted career highs in both rebounds and assists with six each.
Perimeter defense proved key for Southern, as Drake connected on just three of 20 three-point field goal attempts for the game. On the other end of the floor, Southern shot 36.8% from beyond the arc. Six different Salukis connected on threes in the game.
Southern will head back on the road this weekend for a Friday matchup with the Bradley Braves, followed by a Sunday matinee game with the Illinois State Redbirds. The Salukis and Redbirds sit atop the Missouri Valley Conference, with Illinois State (15-9, 11-2) the only other two-loss team in the Valley.
