CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois hosts Bradley on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Banterra Center in the program's annual Blackout Cancer game.
The Blackout Cancer game, sponsored by Southern Illinois Healthcare, raises money for the Coach Kill Cancer Fund and SIH Cancer Institute Expansion. The Salukis will wear special black jerseys with names on the back that were selected by winning jersey bidders. The 10-year total of money raised by the charitable event is $400,844, and the funds have assisted 17,000 local families to date.
The Salukis (13-13, 6-8) are in sixth place in the Missouri Valley Conference with four games remaining. Holding the No. 6 slot is important because the top-6 seeds avoid a Thursday night play-in game at Arch Madness. Southern has a 1.5 game lead over Valparaiso, Indiana State and Illinois State, which are all tied at 4-9.
The Braves (15-11, 9-5) are in fourth place and trail league-leading Loyola by 1.5 games. They are the league's hottest team, having won seven of their last eight games.
In the first meeting between the teams on Jan. 22, Bradley used big runs at the start of each half (15-5, 10-2) on its way to a 70-62 win in Peoria. Lance Jones led SIU with 19 points.
Quoting Coach Mullins
"Bradley's defense has really improved over the course of the Valley season. They have great length, they're very organized and disciplined on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, they have multiple guys that step up on different nights and beat you. Their depth has really helped them. They beat us the first time at their place, and our guys are looking forward to the opportunity (Tuesday) night."
