Salukis open outdoor season at Murray State

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field team will open the 2022 outdoor season Friday at the Margaret Simmons Invite, hosted by Murray State University. The meet will be held at Marshall Gage Track at Roy Stewart Stadium.
Most of the team will be returning to action for the first time since the Missouri Valley Conference Championships on Feb. 27-28. At the conference meet, SIU nabbed three individual titles, all on the women's side. Shauniece O'Neal was named the MVC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete for the second consecutive year after taking home gold in the weight throw, which defended her title from the year before. A'veun Moore-Jones also repeated as champion after she took home gold in the women's shot put. Iaunia Pointer was MVC champion for her first place finish in the 200m dash.
Three Salukis extended their indoor seasons and competed at the NCAA National Championships which was held in Fayetteville, Ark. Shauniece O'Neal and Elisia Lancaster earned Second-Team All-American honors for their placement, while A'veun Moore-Jones took home First-Team All-American honors for her 8th place mark.
Day one of the meet will start with the heptathalon events at 12:20 p.m. Field events will kick off at 2:00 p.m. with the women's hammer thrown and the men's discus. Running events will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the women's 200m. The action starts back up on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. with the Heptathalon. Both field and running events are slotted to begin at noon.
SIU and Evansville will represent the Missouri Valley Conference at the meet. A total of five Ohio Valley Conference schools are set to attend the meet as well (Murray St., Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, and SIU-Edwardsville). The meet will be streamed on ESPN+ to watch for fans not in attendance.

Following this weekend, the Salukis will compete at the Joey Haine Invitational hosted by SEMO on April 1-2.
