Salukis head to Ole Miss for Joe Walker Invite

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program will take to the road and head to Oxford, Miss., to partake in the Joe Walker Invite on April 8-9.
The heptathalon and women's hammer throw will kick off the meet at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Running events are slated to begin Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. The action resumes on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. with the conclusion of the heptathalon. Field events will start at 12:00 p.m. with the discus.
A total of 26 schools and 48 teams are set to compete in the two-day meet. The Missouri Valley Conference will be represented by Southern Illinois and Bradley. Six schools from the Southeastern Conference will be competing as well (Ole Miss, Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt).

Last Time Out
The Salukis are coming off the Joey Haines Invitational last weekend, which was held on the campus of SEMO in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
A total of 16 Salukis were able to reach the podium over the course of the two-day meet. A'veun Moore-Jones and the men's 4x100 squad were captured gold in their respective events. Moore-Jones placed first in the shot put by securing a mark of 17.10m (56' 1.25"). That mark was a new personal best for her in outdoor shot, and currently ranks as the 9th longest mark in the NCAA. The men's relay squad of Caleb Massiah, Jeremiah Hamilton, Corey Sherrod, and Ja'Den Johnson won their event in 42.14.
Moore-Jones and Darrione Williams were named Missouri Valley Conference Field Athletes of the Week on Wednesday for their performances over the weekend. Williams placed second in the men's long jump and third in the men's triple jump. He recorded new personal bests in each event.

Following this weekend, the Salukis will take a week off of competition before returning to compete at the Illini Invitational hosted by Illinois on April 22-23.
