OXFORD, Miss. – Kayla Schiera claims another SIU record in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase, as the Salukis wrapped up competition on Saturday at the Joe Walker Invitational on the campus of Ole Miss.
Conditions were uncharacteristically colder and windier than usual over the course of the two-day meet in Mississippi. The field events were the first action for the Salukis on Friday afternoon. Shauniece O'Neal and Elisia Lancaster were able to advance out of the second flight and make it to the finals. Lancaster's first mark of 64.20m (210' 07") was good enough to secure her fourth place in the competition. O'Neal's last throw of the finals measured out to 65.21m (213' 11"), securing her second place and the top collegiate finisher.
A trio of long jumpers for the Dawgs all finished within the top-5. Dasani Edward grabbed silver by clearing 22' 9.75". Darrione Williams (22' 9.25") and Caleb Massiah (22' 1.75") finished in third and fifth respectively. Iaunia Pointer was able to run a new personal best in the 200 Meter at 23.52. She improves her 3rd best time in school history with that finish.
The excitement of the night came in the women's 3000 Meter Steeplechase. Kayla Shciera ran a new personal best of 9:58.31 to break the previous SIU record of 10:12.54 held by Krista Menghini since 2014. That time broke the previous by more than 14 seconds, and also set a new facility record for the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex. Her time ranks in as the third best time in the NCAA heading into this weekends competition. That was the thrid time this year that Schiera has broken a SIU Track & Field Record. She previously broke the 3000 and 5000 Meter program records during the indoor season.
Moments later in the men's steeplechase, Dawson Smith was able run down the competition in the home stretch to finish in 8:58.65. That time was a new PR for Smith and propels him into 6th all-time at SIU in the steeplechase event.
The field events once again kicked off the action on day two. A'veun Moore-Jones placed second in the women's shot put with a mark of 16.10m (52' 10"). Both Bri'Yanna Robinson and Kayleigh Conlon also advanced out of flight two and into the finals. Dasani Edward won his second silver medal in as many days in the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.84m (45' 5").
The Saluki women were able to place second in the 4x100 Relay. Miracle Berry, Olivia Garner, Jhordin Galmore, and Iaunia Pointer finished in a season best time of 45.82, trailing only host school Ole Miss.
Corey Sherrod grabbed silver in the men's 400 Meter with a time of 48.80. That was his first individual 400 action of the outdoor season. Omar Rodgers gave the Salukis their second event win on the weekend with his 52.42 finish in the 400 Meter Hurdles.
The Saluki men's 4x400 Relay squad capped off the Joe Walker Invite with a win against some tough competition. The group of Omar Rodgers, Darrione Williams, Jeremiah Hamilton, and Corey Sherrod ran a season best time of 3:18.55 to grab gold.
The Salukis will have an off weekend from competition before hitting the road again to travel to Champaign, Ill. to compete in the Illini Invitational on April 22-23.
