The Southern Illinois University volleyball team has been picked to finish twelfth in the Missouri Valley Conference standings this year, in a poll conducted by league coaches and announced Wednesday.Â
Fresh off a MVC Tournament crown, Illinois State was tabbed the league favorites, receiving 134 points and five first-place votes. The Redbirds narrowly edged second-place pick, Evansville (121 points) and UIC (108).
Bradley (99 points) finished fourth in the poll, while Valparaiso (95 points, one 1st place vote), UNI (94 points, one 1st place vote), Missouri State (80 points), Indiana State (71 points), Drake (49 points), Murray State (43 points), Belmont (26 points) and Southern Illinois (16 points) round out the poll.
The Salukis enter their fourth season under the direction of head coach Ed Allen and return 10 letterwinners from a season ago, which includes five starters. Southern's roster of 15 features seven upperclassmen as well as five newcomers. SIU's returnees are led by junior outside hitter Tatum Tornatta. The Evansville, Ind. native finished 11th in the MVC in total kills (316) and put down double-digit kills in 16 matches, which included a season-high 18 in a four-set match against Loyola on Sept. 25.Â
The 2022 season gets underway August 26-27 when the Salukis host SIUE and Grambling State for the Saluki Bash. Southern takes on the Cougars on Friday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. inside Banterra Center.
