Swimming & Diving wins 16 of 32 events at Indiana State tri-meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Southern Illinois swimming and diving teams returned to action on Saturday for the first time since November with a tri-meet at Indiana State's Vigo County Aquatic Center.
The men's team defeated Ball State, 196-102, while the women's team fell to the host Sycamores (193-107) and Ball State (152-148).
In total, the Salukis won 16 of the day's 32 events, with the men picking up 11 of the wins.
"It was good to see the men and women compete for the first time in almost two months," said head coach Geoff Hanson. "There were definitely some bright spots for individuals and the men came away with a solid win. Both teams, however, were a bit humbled and we know there is a lot of room for improvement. Fortunately, we have several more opportunities before the championship meets in the coming weeks."
Ukrainian sophomore Jack Khrypunov led the Salukis with three victories, taking first in the 200 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 100 IM. A pair of freshmen, Alex Cimera and Ruard van Renen, each won two events, and van Renen contributed to Southern's victory in the 200 medley relay.
On the women's side, Ali Robertson won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, while Olivia Herron took home first place in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM.
The Salukis return home for Senior Day next Friday when they host Little Rock and Lindenwood in a tri-meet that begins at 3 p.m.
