CARBONDALE, Ill. — Ashley Jones scored a career-high 30 points for Southern Illinois, which led by one point after three quarters, but Drake rallied to win, 87-73, on Thursday night at the Banterra Center.
The Salukis (7-11, 4-5) were clinging to a 64-63 lead as the fourth quarter began, but the Bulldogs (12-5, 7-2) reeled off 16-straight points and cruised to a 14-point win.
"For three quarters, we moved the ball around and created for each other," said SIU head coach Kelly Bond-White. "The biggest change in the fourth quarter was we didn't get back defensively — their leak-outs and us not getting back."
Jones came out on fire in the first quarter with eight points and four assists. Her driving layup early in the second stanza gave Southern its largest lead of the night, 29-20.
Drake led, 43-42, at the half, and the third quarter was a see-saw affair in a game that featured 12 lead changes and 10 ties. Jones scored her 28th point at the end of the third, giving the Salukis a precarious one point lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Salukis went nearly seven minutes without scoring in the fourth period, falling behind, 79-64, before Tamara Nard broke the ice with a layup.
"(Drake) didn't do anything different in the fourth quarter," Bond-White said. "We have some players who can make plays, but when we don't have continuity through our offense, when we don't have trust of staying with it, then we panic a little and try to do it ourselves."
Southern was 2-for-15 from the field in the fourth, compared to 10-for-15 for Drake. Jones' only points in the period were a pair of free throws with 1:41 remaining.
"We're going to miss shots, but it shouldn't affect what we do on the other end," Bond-White added. "With Drake you have to guard multiple actions. You take away one thing, the next cutter is coming."
Drake had five players in double figures and Katie Dinnebier dished out 14 assists.
In addition to Jones' career night, Aja Holmes came off the bench for SIU to make 4-of-6 from 3-point range and finish with 14 points.
The home stand continues for SIU when it hosts Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Banterra Center.
