Important Tournament Experience For Salukis Before White Sands Bahamas Invitational
MURRAY, KY. — A busy week upcoming for Saluki Men's Golf, as SIU will send 7 individuals to compete in The Buddy Championship in Murray, Kentucky. This is the inaugural start of The Buddy Championship, a 54-hole tournament at the home of MVC member Murray State, Miller Memorial Golf Course.
The 54-hole event calls for 36 holes of play Monday with the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday morning with a shotgun start of 8 a.m. each day.
"We are so excited to watch these young men go compete in a golf tournament the next couple of days," said SIU head coach Justin Fetcho. "They have been working extremely hard back home and to be able to see them now go compete in an event is icing on the cake."
With this being the biggest roster Fetcho has had in his time at Southern Illinois, with 12 men making up the 2023-24 roster, tournament experience is important for his players.
"Nothing can replicate tournament golf and we are very excited that these young men have an opportunity to experience that over the next few days."
The Dawgs will send Andrew Watson, Braden Hoisington, Frank Bellino, Justin Wingerter, Oliver Ulrich and Peyton Thevenot.
Andrew Watson was part of the starting lineup for SIU earlier this year at Kansas State, where Watson helped propel Southern Illinois to a second place team finish in the Wildcat Invitational.
The Buddy will mark the first action of the fall for Ulrich and Hoisington.
