
Women's Basketball Starts Season on Tuesday Against SEMO

HOW TO WATCH/LISTEN
- SIU's game against SEMO can be watched on ESPN+ on Tuesday night. Dominic Hoscher (play-by-play) and Mike Trude (analyst) will be on the call.Â
- The season opener will also be on 95.1 Steve FM with Larry Larson doing the broadcasting duties.Â
• Southern Illinois had a 12-19 overall record and a 8-12 record in Missouri Valley Conference play in 2022-23.Â
• The Salukis made it to the second round of the conference tournament last season, falling to Belmont, 70-64, on March 10. SIU won its first-round matchup, 81-79, against Indiana State on March 9.Â
• This was the third consecutive season in which the Salukis advanced past the opening round of the tournament.Â
• Southern was powered by an explosive offense in 2022-23, ranking third in the Valley with 73.4 points-per-game. The average ranked 44th in the nation.Â
• SIU returns three starters (Quierra Love, Shemera Williams, Laniah Randle) from a year ago. Overall, Southern has nine returners and four newcomers.Â
• Three of SIU's newcomers are freshmen (Tkiyah Nelson, Maddy Saracco, Angela Samuel), while its fourth is a transfer (Se'Quoia Allmond). Allmond comes to SIU after spending the last two seasons at Loyola Marymount University.Â
LEADING THE SALUKIS
 • Shemera Williams is the team's leading returning scorer from last season, averaging 10.8 points-per-game in 2022-23. Williams is in her second season at SIU after previously being at USC and Virginia.Â
• Quierra Love returns for her fourth season as a Saluki. Last year, Love was named to the MVC All- Defensive team after averaging 2.0 steals-per-game. The veteran guard also was second on the Salukis in assists (3.9 per game).Â
• Jaidynn Mason was named to the MVC All-Freshmen team in 2022-23, averaging 7.5 points, 2.2 assists, and 1.8 steals in 31 games played.Â
• Laniah Randle, who had 21 points and 10 rebounds in SIU's exhibition against Greenville last week, led Southern in rebounding last season, averaging 6.5 boards-per-game.Â
• The Salukis' roster is made up of four seniors, five juniors, one sophomore, and three freshmen. SIU's four seniors are Williams, Love, Adrianna Katcher, and Sydney Prochaska.Â
LOOKING AT SEMO
 • The Redhawks ended the 2022-23 season with a 16-15 overall record and a 10-8 Ohio Valley Conference record.Â
• Southeast Missouri State made it to the OVC semifinals before falling to top-seeded Little Rock, 49- 35, on March 3.Â
• In the OVC Preseason Poll, the Redhawks were picked to finish fifth out of 11 teams.Â
• Junior guard Jaliyah Green was the lone Redhawk to receive preseason honors, as she was named to the Preseason All-OVC Team. Green led the team in scoring with 10.5 points-per-game last season.Â
SERIES HISTORY
 • Southern Illinois is 31-7 all-time against SEMO. This will be the 39th meeting between the two programs.Â
• The most recent contest came on Nov. 30, 2021, at SEMO, where SIU won, 78-61. Love had 10 points and three steals in the win.Â
• SIU has won seven of the last eight games between the Salukis and Redhawks, dating back to 2014.Â
• The first-ever meeting between SIU and SEMO was all of the way back in 1961-62, and resulted in a Saluki victory.Â
• This is the first game in Carbondale since Dec. 13, 2020, where Southern won, 67-51.Â
