CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (1-0) opened the season with a 85-70 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday night at the Banterra Center.
"We got into our style of basketball in the second half," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "Those kids shared the ball. We had 18 assists on 31 baskets. That's special, that's unselfish, and that's the way we have to play this season."
Both teams came out hot to start the game, as SEMO scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field, while SIU scored 23 on 8-of-17 shooting. The first quarter would be the only time the Redhawks would score above 20 points in a quarter for the remainder of the game.
The defenses tightened up in the second quarter, with SEMO out-scoring Southern, 17-12, before the half. At the break, the Redhawks had a 41-37 advantage with Alecia Doyle's 12 points leading the way. SIU was led by Jaidynn Mason at the end of the half, scoring nine points and tallying three assists.
Southern trailed 52-43 at 5:28 in the third before going on a 16-1 run to close-out the quarter with a 59-53 lead. This would turn into a 24-1 run after the first couple minutes of the fourth, with the Salukis leading 67-53 at 8:12.
The Salukis went on to out-score the Redhawks, 26-17, in the final quarter to earn the 85-70 win. SIU shot 57.5% from the field in the second half and were 5-of-8 from deep.
Five players scored in double-figures for Southern Illinois, with Shemera Williams and Quierra Love's 16 points each pacing the Salukis. Mason (13), Laniah Randle (12), and Seairra Hughes (11) also scored over 10 points in the game.
SIU, now 1-0, will stay home for a Saturday matchup against Cornell at 2 p.m. at the Banterra Center.
