Ashley Jones surpassed the 1,000-point scoring plateau for her career.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Belmont extended its winning streak to nine games with an 80-70 win over the Southern Illinois women's basketball team on Friday night at the Banterra Center.
The Bruins (16-10, 12-3) trailed by as many as six points in the early going, taking their first lead midway through the second quarter. They never trailed thereafter, though it was a single-digit lead much of the way.
The Salukis (9-16, 6-9) were led by Quierra Love's 15 points, which was her season high in scoring. Center Promise Taylor added 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
"I have to find a way to get our interior the ball more," said SIU head coach Kelly Bond-White. "There's nobody in this league who can score like Promise can, with her efficiency in there."
Less than a month ago, Belmont handed the Salukis a 56-point loss in Nashville. Southern's biggest improvement since that meeting has come on the defensive end. Tonight, the Salukis forced Belmont into 18 turnovers.
"Being able to turn the page from what happened down in Nashville last time and compete — I was proud of that," Bond-White said.
It wasn't a typical Ashley Jones night, as SIU's leading scorer was held to 11 points on 2-of-12 shooting, but she did surpass 1,000 points for her career and reached double figures for the 20th time in 23 games this season.
After a good start for Southern, the game turned in the second quarter when SIU's three-leading scorers each picked up two fouls. Jones and Taylor were whistled for their second fouls during the opening minute of the quarter, while Shemera Williams got her second at the six-minute mark.
The result was a 14-2 Belmont run during the last six minutes of the half, as the Bruins turned a 24-19 deficit into a 33-26 halftime lead.
"We got in some early foul trouble that I wasn't happy with," Bond-White said. "When our kids were on the bench with foul trouble, we just couldn't get any continuity through substitution."
Southern will play game two of a four-game home-stand on Sunday at 5 p.m. versus Murray State, in the program's annual Blackout Cancer game. Fans who purchase a ticket to the men's game versus Bradley at 1 p.m. can use their men's ticket for admission to the women's game.
