Promise Taylor finishes with a triple double of 20 points, 11 rebounds and a school-record 10 blocked shots.
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day in style with an impressive 105-59 win over Evansville on Saturday.
SIU seniors Promise Taylor and Ashley Jones were recognized during a pregame ceremony, and then proceeded to dominate the Purple Aces (11-16, 6-12) during the next 40 minutes.
Taylor had a career game for the Salukis (11-16, 8-10) — finishing with a triple double of 20 points, 11 rebounds and a school-record 10 blocked shots. Jones added 20 points herself, plus eight assists.
"I asked our seniors to lead with their heart, to be selfless, but show the way," said SIU head coach Kelly Bond-White. "I asked their teammates to honor them by looking for them."
Southern never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 14-2 lead, with Taylor and Jones scoring a dozen of those points.
SIU reached the century mark in scoring for the third time this season, scoring at least 25 points in each quarter.
"Our offensive output that you saw today is what this team is capable of doing," Bond-White said. "I'm challenging them to go forth one possession at a time and play with heart."
Taylor's 10 blocked shots gives her 82 on the season, tying CiCi Shannon's single-season school record. She had seven blocks in the first half alone.
Between Taylor and her teammates, SIU out-scored the Aces, 64-26, in points in the paint.
"Coach told everyone to pull together for the seniors, and I'm really appreciative of my teammates," Taylor said. "I think it was a product of everything we've worked on in practice, being in the right spot, getting open for the right shot."
The Salukis dictated the pace of the game throughout, pressuring the ball for 13 steals, that resulted in a 72-58 advantage in shot attempts. During one frenetic fourth-quarter stretch, they ran off 15 unanswered points.
"I think you've seen it in spurts, in terms of creating chaos," Bond-White said. "We want to be disruptive on defense."
Southern has two road games remaining at Northern Iowa and Drake before heading to the Hoops In The Heartland conference tournament, March 9-12.
"I told them before the game, it's been a long year, but it could just be starting with a new season on the horizon," Bond-White said.
