CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's basketball team led the entire 40 minutes during a 77-47 win over Valparaiso on Saturday at the Banterra Center.
The Salukis (8-13, 5-7) got another big game from Ashley Jones, who finished with 19 points. SIU center Promise Taylor had her best conference game of the season with 19 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Jaidynn Mason added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
Southern snapped a four-game losing streak with its top defensive performance of the season, holding the Beacons (4-17, 2-10) under 50 — the fewest points allowed by SIU since it limited Loyola to 28 last March.
"It feels good to be on the winning side," said SIU head coach Kelly Bond-White. "Happy for our ladies who have worked hard — we've brought back the Breakfast Club and been up at 6 a.m., just to get a little more detail-oriented and make sure the girls are focusing, watching film and getting skill-work in."
The 6-foot-5 Taylor was unstoppable once she got the ball in her hands, converting 8-of-9 shots from the field.
"She was very efficient tonight," Bond-White. "Her teammates looked for her and we got her the ball in positions where all she had to do was drop-step or make a little short jumper."
SIU took control of the game midway through the second quarter, using a 9-0 run to push a two-point lead to 11. Jones and Shemera Williams capped the run with back-to-back 3-pointers.
The Salukis led by nine heading to the final period, but stretched the margin to as much as 30 with a 19-3 run to open the stanza. Southern finished with 21 assists.
"When we're moving the ball, sharing the ball, we can be pretty special," Bond-White said.
With eight games left in the conference schedule, the Salukis return to the road next week with games at Illinois State and Bradley.
Bond-White said her team's getting back to the style of her mentor, Arkansas' Nolan Richardson, with the "40 minutes of hell" style of constant pressure.
"We're getting back to 40 minutes of hell, defensively," she said. "Getting up the line, getting after people, pressuring them and not letting them do what they want to do. Even if we don't have all the pieces in place just yet, we're going to learn it and get after it. I thought our kids did an excellent job of that."
