Salukis' season comes to an end in second round against Belmont

MOLINE, Ill. - In a game that came down to the final moments in the fourth quarter, the Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (12-19) ultimately fell short against Belmont on Friday night, as the Salukis lost by a final score of 70-64.
Southern's season comes to an end after making it to the second round for the third consecutive season. SIU was coming off of a 81-79 win over Indiana State in its first round matchup on Thursday night.
The Salukis led at the end of the first quarter, holding an 18-17 advantage over the second seeded Bruins. Southern Illinois started the game 8-of-17 from the field through the opening 10 minutes.
Southern remained up by one after both teams scored 19 points in the second quarter. The Salukis went 2-of-3 from deep in the second after not hitting a three in the first quarter. At the end of the half, the Salukis held a 37-36 lead.
For the second time in the game, both teams were even on points in a quarter, as both Southern and Belmont scored 16 points in the third. Heading into the fourth, SIU remained up by one.
Belmont sharpened on the defensive end in the final 10 minutes, holding the Salukis to just 11 points as it out-scored SIU, 18-11. The Bruins went 9-of-13 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to secure the 70-64 win.
Laniah Randle led the Salukis with 12 points in the game, followed by Shemera Williams' 11 and Ashley Jones' 10.
With the loss, the season comes to an end for Southern Illinois in the second round of the conference tournament. SIU finishes the year with an overall record of 12-19.
