Salukis wrap up season at NCAA Preliminary Round

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University track and field team finished its 2023 outdoor season this past week at the NCAA Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif.Â
Events began on Wednesday for SIU with the men's shot put, where Cole Targgart posted a mark of 17.69m. Targgart finished 35th out of 48 in the event.Â
On Thursday, Iaunia Pointer was able to advance in both the women's 100m and 200m dash after earning top-24 finishes in both events. In the 100m dash, Pointer was tied for 23rd out of 48 athletes with a time of 11.50. In the 200m dash, Pointer posted a time of 23.37, which ranked 21st out of 48.
Targgart and Daniel Norris both represented the Salukis in the men's discus on Friday, with Targgart tallying a mark of 55.02m to finish 24th and Norris putting up a mark of 53.44m.
Dawson Smith competed in the men's 3000m steeplechase, where he posted a time of 8:54.39.Â
On the final day of the meet, Rachel Anderson put up a time of 10:49.80 in the women's 3000m steeplechase. In the quarterfinals of the 100m and 200m dash, Pointer ran a time of 11.44 in the 100m dash and 23.07 in the 200m dash.Â
Southern Illinois' women's 4x400m relay team of Pointer, Shavell Riley, Miracle Berry, and Vashti Grey combined for a time of 3:45.04 in the event.Â
