Southern Illinois heads to IUPUI for first road game

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's women's soccer team (1-0-0) is heading to IUPUI for its first road match of the 2023 season on Sunday at 12 p.m.

The Salukis are off to a 1-0-0 start after earning a 2-1 win over Jackson State on Thursday at home.
Kaitlin DuCharme scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute from the penalty spot to secure the 2-1 victory. McKensey Bunch scored the team's first goal of the season on a rocket from outside the box in the 50th minute. Freshman Ava Pugliese picked up the assist on Bunch's goal.
Chantelle Symes picked up the win in goal, making two saves while allowing one goal.
Southern Illinois out-shot Jackson State, 11-9, in the match. Both sides had three shots-on-goal.
The win was head coach Graeme Orr's first as a Saluki.
In 2022, SIU posted a record 8-5-4 overall and 5-2-3 in conference play, both program bests. The strong season resulted in the Salukis hosting their first-ever playoff match on Oct. 30, 2022, against Murray State.
Southern Illinois posted two six-game unbeaten runs last season, one lasting from Sept. 1 to Sept. 25, and the other from Oct. 2 to Oct. 20.
On the offensive end, Southern finished the year tied for fifth in goals scored with 19 on the season.
The Salukis have 16 returners and 15 newcomers heading into the 2023 season. 13 of the 15 newcomers are freshmen, to go along with the team's two transfers (Sydney Byrd and Dana Cruz).
DuCharme and Emma Spotak were tied for second on the team in goals in 2022, both scoring three goals each. Spotak also tallied one assist on the year.
Spotak was named as an honorable mention in the 2023 MVC Preseason Poll, as voted on by head coaches across the league.
Riley Maulick is the leading returner in minutes played from last season, posting 1376 minutes throughout the campaign.
Southern Illinois will bring back two of its goalkeepers, with the duo being Symes and Ary Lougher.
Lougher played and started four games, allowing just two goals while making 12 saves in the four appearances. Symes made two saves in her lone appearance against Lindenwood University on Aug. 18, 2022.
Sam Dodd was the team's leader in shots a year ago, putting up 32 on the campaign and 13 shots-on-goal.

Head Coach Graeme Orr

Graeme Orr enters his first season as head coach of the women's soccer program. Assistant coaches Carley Kandel and Ash Phillips are also in their first year with the Salukis, while Jake Edwards returns for his second season as a graduate assistant on the coaching staff.
Orr comes to SIU after spending the previous 12 seasons as the head coach at Division II West Alabama. He was announced as the Salukis' head coach on May 30, 2023.
The Eaglesham, Scotland native, was the first head coach in West Alabama women's soccer history, starting the program in 2011. During his 12 years with the program, Orr posted an overall record of 115-78-19 and conference record of 79-44-9.
UWA recorded 10-consecutive and had 11-straight postseason appearances under Orr.
Orr was previously an assistant coach at North Alabama before arriving at West Alabama.

Looking at IUPUI

The Jaguars are also 1-0-0 after defeating Southern Indiana, 2-0, on Thursday.
IUPUI scored in both halves, with Shannon Ott opening the scoring in the 17th minute and Caroline Kelley extending the Jags' lead in the 55th minute.
Ashton Kudlo tallied the clean sheet in goal, while also making three saves.
IUPUI went 9-4-6 in 2022 and 4-3-3 in conference play. At home, the Jaguars were 5-0-4.
In the Horizon League tournament, the Jags advanced past Oakland in the first round before eventually falling to Milwaukee, 3-1, in the second round.
Forward Emma Antoine is the team's leading returning scorer from a year ago, scoring six goals in 2022.
The Jaguars are led by head coach Chris Johnson, who is in his 21st year as the program's head coach.

Series History

This is only the second meeting all-time between SIU and IUPUI.
The last time the two sides met was on Sept. 1, 2019, when the Jags defeated Southern, 2-0.
