Three Salukis Finish Top-11
MANHATTAN, Ka. – Salukis finish with three players in the top-15 on the individual leader board, while posting the second best scores in the second and third round, and wrap up the Wildcat Invitational with a second place finish with a team score of 852 (-12), only 5 shots out of winning the tournament as a team.
"Really proud of the entire team effort this week. We put ourselves in a position to play in the final pairing with the leaders on their home golf course today," said head coach Justin Fetcho. "We battled all day long and went toe to toe with a very good team. Shooting the 2nd best score of the day, while being in the hunt to win a golf tournament is very encouraging."
Sophomore Edouard Cereto continued his red hot start to his Saluki career, as for the second consecutive tournament he finishes in the top three, this week finishing tied for third with a final score of 208 (-8). He was the highest finisher again for SIU.
"Edouard continued his stellar play this year," said Fetcho. "He's proving that he is a gamer. He's the guy you want on your side coming down the final 9 holes to win a golf tournament."
The other two Salukis that finished in the top-15 of the leader board were Dain Richie and Hugo Archer. Richie wrapped up the tournament with a score of 71 on the final day, for his full tournament scorecard at 211 (-5). Archer's second round put him in the top-10 of the tournament and finished Tied for 11th with a tournament score of 215 (-1).
"Dain and Hugo played solid golf all week. Dain was one of 3 players in the entire golf tournament to shoot under par all 3 rounds. Hugo played really well, too. Having 3 players finish in the Top 11 on the leader board shows the depth of our program. That's something we have talked about all year and we take great pride in knowing that we have many different players that can play well each week."
Andrew Watson and Carsen Silliman were also part of the Saluki lineup that helped push SIU into the second place team finish. Watson's best round was his even par round of 72 to end the day on Monday, while Silliman's best round was the opening round on Monday morning shooting one over par with a 73. Watson finished tied for 27th and Silliman was tied for 50th.
Next up for the Salukis will be a trip to Alabama this weekend for the Graeme McDowell Invitational, which will be hosted by UAB in Oneonta, Alabama.
"We have a short week this week as we turn around and head to UAB. We will get back and get some rest and then get back to the grind of preparing for another event. It's fun watching these guys compete and looking forward to seeing it again next week."
