Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois (9-4, 1-1 MVC) continued its road trip to Valparaiso on Saturday for its second Missouri Valley Conference matchup of the season. Coming off a four-set win at UIC the night before, the Salukis came up short against the Beacons in three-sets (21-25, 24-26, 19-25).Â
Valpo's stingy defense gave the Salukis trouble throughout the match as the Dawgs hit for just a .147 hitting percentage and 36 kills. Annabelle Sulish led the Salukis in both kills (9) and digs (12) as she neared her second double-double of the weekend. Imani Hartfield, Nataly Garcia, and Kelly Franklin all tallied seven kills each in the match.
Junior setter Anna Jaworski also had a double-double of her own with 12 assists and nine digs.Â
Defensively, the Salukis were solid as they totaled a season-high 10 blocks led by freshman Vienna Elliott who had six block assists followed by Tatum Tornatta, Nataly Garcia, and Imani Hartfield who each assisted on four as well.Â
Southern will return to Davies Gym for their first pair of home conference matches this Friday, September 29-30 as Indiana State and Evansville come to Carbondale. The Salukis and Purple Aces will play Friday night at 6pm followed by a 5pm start on Saturday with Indiana State.
