NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (7-12, 2-7 MVC) took the loss on Sunday at Belmont, falling to the Bruins, 72-64.
Southern Illinois had the lead at the end of the first quarter, pacing Belmont, 16-15. The Salukis started the game red-hot from three-point range, going 3-for-3 with Quierra Love draining two while Paige Clubb added one.
Belmont was held to 5-of-15 shooting from the field through the first 10 minutes of the game.
It was a battle of the two defenses in the second quarter, with the Bruins out-scoring SIU, 13-12. Both teams posted field-goal percentages of 40% in the second, while Laniah Randle led the Salukis with nine points in the quarter.
The Bruins' offense started to get going in the third, scoring 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting while Southern scored 10. SIU went just 3-of-11 from the field in the quarter.
SIU had its best quarter offensively in the fourth, as the Salukis posted a game-high 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Despite the strong offense, Southern was unable to slow down the Bruins, as the Salukis fell, 72-64.
Overall, Southern Illinois shot 44% from the field, 67% (6-of-9) from deep, and 82% at the free throw line. Randle scored a team-high 17 points, while Love and Jaidynn Mason both posted 14 points each.
The Salukis, now 7-12 overall and 2-7 in Missouri Valley Conference play, will be back at home on Saturday, Feb. 3, to host Missouri State at 4 p.m. at the Banterra Center.
