News | Gallegos, Huggins, and Santiago Receive MVC Weekly Awards

ST. LOUIS – Alex Santiago, Willem Huggins, and Liseska Gallegos of the Southern Illinois swimming and diving team received weekly Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) honors, the conference announced this morning.
Santiago was named Men's Swimmer of the Week, Huggins was named Men's Freshman of the Week, and Gallegos was named Women's Freshman of the Week.
Santiago earned seven first-place "A" final finishes last weekend during the A3 Performance Invitational. He set MVC records in the 50-yard freestyle (19.65) and 100-yard freestyle (44.14) and was part of record-setting relay teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 200-yard freestyle relay. This marks the second time this season Santiago has received the Swimmer of the Week honor.
Huggins was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after recording six first-place "A" final finishes and one second-place finish at the A3 Performance Invitational. He set an MVC record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:44.85 and contributed to record-setting relay teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay, and 200-yard freestyle relay.
Gallegos posted three second-place "A" final finishes at the A3 Performance Invitational. She achieved personal bests and program top-10 times in the 200-yard IM (2:01.88), 200-yard backstroke (1:57.92), and 100-yard backstroke (53.93). This is the second time this season Gallegos has earned an MVC weekly award.
