SAN MARCOS, Texas — Southern Illinois dropped its first game of the season on Saturday, falling to Northwestern State, 6-3, in a game that was delayed by morning thunderstorms.
When the teams finally took the field at 11:45 a.m., the Salukis (2-1) struck first with three runs in the bottom of second inning.
Anna Carder opened the inning with a single to center, Erin Lee followed with a walk, and Emma Austin loaded the bases with a one-out single.
Lee scored Southern's first run on a fielding error by second baseman Taylor Williams. Elizabeth Warwick then singled to right field to drive in two runs.
Madi Eberle (0-1) started and gave up four runs, three earned in three innings. Hannah Hockerman pitched 2.2 innings and allowed two runs.
Freshman Aly Delafield pitched four innings of scoreless relief to earn her first victory for the Lady Demons (2-2).
SIU plays host-school Texas State later this evening.
