Recap | Salukis Finish Day Two with Shutout Over Purdue

CONWAY, Ark. - Southern Illinois split day two of the Michelle Short Classic Memorial after dropping its first game to Central Arkansas before coming back 30 minutes later and taking down Purdue 2-0 in Maddia Groff's second complete-game shutout of the season.
The Salukis win over the Boilermakers is their second of the season over a Big Ten opponent as they improve to 7-3 overall on the season with one game with Purdue remaining for the weekend slate.Â
SIU was held hitless through the first four innings but were able to get the bats going in the second half of the contest, finishing with six hits. Freshman Amanda Knutson made her first career start and notched her first career hit on a line drive single to spark a rally in the fifth. Warwick got one via hit by pitch followed by an infield single for Emma Austin and the bases were loaded for Rylie Hamilton. Hamilton stayed patient and drew a walk, breaking the 0-0 tie and giving Southern its first lead of the day. Sidney Jones followed Hamilton's RBI-walk with one of her own and the Dawgs took a 2-0 lead to the bottom half of the inning.Â
Maddia Groff allowed a hit in the first inning before going on to retire 13-straight Boilermakers prior to allowing her second and final hit of the game in the sixth inning. She finished with eight strikeouts, the third time this season she's hit that mark for a season-best.Â
The Salukis will look to finish strong on Sunday with one more game against Purdue before wrapping up the weekend. First pitch for Sunday's game is scheduled for 12:30 PM following the conclusion of game one beginning at 10 AM.
