SAN MARCOS, Texas — After tossing a perfect game against Creighton in the morning, Maddia Groff pitched 4.2 innings of perfect relief in the afternoon to lift Southern Illinois to a 6-5 extra innings win over UTSA on Friday in the Texas State tournament.
For the day, Groff picked up two wins and retired all 35 batters that she faced, not allowing a single player to reach base. She struck out 14, including six Ks in relief against the Roadrunners.
With the score tied, 5-5, and one out in the bottom of the fourth, Groff entered the game with the bases loaded and put out the fire, forcing a pair of groundouts.
Neither team scored again until the top of the eight, when SIU's Addi Baker singled home Rylinn Groff, who was placed at second base, for the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the eighth, after a runner was placed at second base, Groff retired Taryn Madlock on a sacrifice bunt and struck out the final two batters to end the game.
"Shoutout to UTSA. Their staff has done a great job with them and they are much improved," said head coach Jen Sewell following the team's second win of the day. Early in the game we were working our plan but I thought once we went up we lost the plan a little bit. The humidity rolled in and the balls weren't going anymore. They kept us off balance wit multiple pitching changes. I want to use the next few days to get on time. We didn't change the timing as fast as we needed to."
The Salukis (2-0) used four pitchers against UTSA, with Hannah Hockerman (1.2 IP) getting the start and Madi Eberle (1.1 IP) and Kiana McDowell (0.1 IP) taking turns in relief.
"Hannah was really good. Eberle and McDowell weren't great matchups for UTSA but they will bounce back," said Sewell. "And obviously Maddia comes in to close it out and made it really hard in the ITB (international tiebreaker rules)."
Southern scored three runs in the first inning and two more in the third, but the Roadrunners came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.
SIU had plenty of baserunners, drawing eight walks on the afternoon, but stranded 10 on the basepaths.
The Salukis play two games on Saturday — versus Northwestern State (10 AM) and host Texas State (2:30 PM).
