Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois shutout Drake 5-0 in game one of the three-game series at Charlotte West Stadium. The Salukis move to 18-4 (3-0 MVC) while the Bulldogs open their Valley schedule with a loss, falling to 10-11 (0-1 MVC).

Madi Eberle made the start in the circle for the Dawgs and held Drake scoreless for 2.2 innings before Maddia Groff took over. Eberle finished with a pair of strikeouts, no walks, and just three hits before handing it over to Groff.Â

Groff came into the game in the third with a runner and two outs and got Emma Dighton, 2023 MVC Newcomer of the Year, swinging for the final out of the inning. Maddia would go on to get her next four outs of the game via strikeout as she fanned seven of the first eight batters she faced and the first five in a row. She finished the night tying her season-high (10) strikeouts as she earned her 12th win of the season while still remaining unbeaten.Â

Southern was held scoreless until the bottom half of the fifth inning where Elizabeth Warwick jumped on a ball and sent her Valley-leading 11th double of the season into the gap in right-center. Jackie Lis followed Warwick's double with a shot out over the wall in right-center field for her team-high fifth of the season.Â

With still no outs in the inning, Anna Carder plated two more on a single through the right side to score Sidney Jones and Rylie Hamilton. Carder and Lis both finished the game, 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Despite going hitless on the night, Sidney Jones added one more to the Salukis lead as she drove in a run on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the sixth. Jones now has a team-high 17 RBIs.

The Salukis and Bulldogs will continue their three-game series Saturday, March 16 at 2 PM followed by a Sunday finale with the first pitch set for 12 PM. Both games can be streamed on ESPN+.
