Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois completed a three-game sweep over Drake Sunday afternoon with an 8-0 (6) victory. The Salukis (20-4, 5-0 MVC) remain unbeaten while earning their 20th win of the season as Drake (10-13, 0-3 MVC) remains winless in league play.
Â
Anna Carder put the Salukis up big in the first inning with her first career grand slam. After a pair of leadoff walks followed by a Rylie Hamilton single, Carder stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and sent one out to straightaway centerfield just getting over the outstretched glove of Drake's center fielder.Â
Â
Hannah Hockerman made the start for the Salukis and held the Bulldogs in check allowing just two walks in the first inning before getting out of the jam with a strikeout. After a one, two, three second inning – Hockerman finished the day with two innings, a strikeout, and no hits.Â
Â
Madi Eberle took over right where Hockerman left off as she went the next four innings allowing just two hits and two walks while earning her sixth win of the season. Eberle has now won five straight decisions.
Â
The Salukis totaled just four hits on the day but were able to plate eight runs thanks to six walks paired with timely hitting.Â
Â
After a big first inning thanks to Carder's grand slam, the Salukis were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth. Katherine Johnson got on base via error and drove in Amanda Knutson after she pinch ran for Erin Lee following her walk. Jackie Lis got her first hit of the day on a double off the left field wall that drove in Johnson with ease.Â
Â
The Salukis used a pair of walks, a fielders choice, and a passed ball to score their seventh run of the game in the sixth inning as Addi Baker scored a run in her first at-bat of the game. With two runners still on, Warwick ended the game with a double to left center to score the eighth and final run of the afternoon. With that double, Warwick now totals 12 on the season, still the most in the Valley.Â
Â
Southern Illinois head to Chicago to take on UIC for a three-game series beginning Friday at 5 PM. The Salukis will look to keep its 13-game winning streak alive as well as remain unbeaten in Valley play.Â
