Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois continued its win streak in Chicago with another Valley sweep over UIC after a pair of wins on Sunday. The Salukis have now won 16 consecutive games as they improve to 24-3 (8-0 MVC). The 16-game winning streak is currently the second-longest active winning streak in the country, behind just Tennessee who has won 17 in a row.
Jackie Lis sent a two-run home run out to left field in the top of the first inning of game one to give the Dawgs a 2-0 advantage. The Flames would quickly wipe that lead however with three unearned runs in the first after a few Saluki errors and defensive mistakes. Madi Eberle made the start but Groff came in the first as she earned her 15th win of the season, with still no losses.
Lis got her third RBI in just the third inning as she tied the game at 3-3. Bailey Caylor drew a walk and would go on to steal second and take third on a throwing error, setting Lis up for an opportunity to bring her home. Lis got on base in all but one at-bat, going 2-for3 with three RBIs in game one.
Southern added three in the fourth inning as Sidney Jones brought home a pair on a single and Rylinn Groff delivered with a sacrifice fly scoring Rylie Hamilton.
UIC got one back in the bottom half of the inning but it wasn't enough as the Salukis would go on to win 6-4.
Game two got underway approximately 30 minutes later with Hannah Hockerman in the circle. Hockerman had a very strong start as she improved to a 2-0 on the season after going four innings and allowing just three hits and one run.
UIC got on the board first as the Salukis trailed for the first time in a Valley game this season. That didn't last long however as Rylie Hamilton got back at the Flames with a two-run home run in the top half of the third to give the Dawgs the lead.
The Salukis didn't slow down there as they would go on to finish the day with 11 hits and nine runs.
Bailey Caylor had two doubles and two RBIs to lead the Salukis hit parade. Rylinn Groff also drove in a pair of runs and added a hit as Maddia Groff earned her first save of the season. Groff came in for Hockerman in the fifth and held the Flames scoreless for the final three innings.
The Salukis are on the road this Tuesday, March 26 as they head to UT Martin for 3 PM first pitch. Tuesday's game will be just one single game and will be streamed on ESPN+.
