EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball picked up a 7-1 road win against SIU Edwardsville Tuesday afternoon at Roy E. Lee Field. The Salukis scored five runs in the third and pitching closed out the win for Southern.
The Salukis (7-5) sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning and recorded three of their five total hits as SIU scored five runs. Jordan Bach doubled home the first run of the game, Steven Loden picked up a sacrifice fly, Bennett Eltoft drew a bases-loaded walk and Mathieu Vallee capped off the scoring with a two-run double and the Salukis never looked back.
SIU got an insurance run in the fifth when Trey Cutchen came home on a passed ball. Bach drove in his third RBI of the day in the eighth on a single to right field.
Most notable on the day was the performance of the Saluki pitching staff which combined to allow just one run in the midweek affair – a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Alec Nigut made his third start for the Salukis and tossed 5.2 innings while striking out three Cougars to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Saluki bullpen put up a zero for the final 3.2 innings. Cole Koonce and Tanner Gerdes struck out two each. Anthony Pron struck out one of the two batters he faced, and Ben Riffe ended the game with a strikeout.
Bach led the Salukis with two hits and three RBIs while Vallee had two RBIs and a stolen base.
Matt Gist (0-2) took the loss for SIUE after surrendering four runs on five walks and two hits in two innings.
