NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Southern Illinois wrapped up its regular season Saturday at the Music City Challenge and Penn Relays Saturday, April 27. The team sent its top sprinters to Penn, and the rest of the team competed at Vanderbilt.
Both meets contained competition from some of the best high-major programs in the country, and Director of Track and Field Richard Jones believes it brings extra concentration to his team.
"Going to these meets creates enough focus and keeps them striving to maintain the goals we have set for ourselves this season," he said.
The men's and women's 4x400 squads highlight the weekend after winning their respective group's finals at the Penn Relays.
The women's group of Vashti Grey, Leah Thames, Selisa Palmer and Teanna Bell smashed their season-best time by nearly 5 seconds, running 3:42.87. Grey was a part of last year's squad that won the event as well.
Shortly after, the men's team of Shane Ashton, Xavier Preston, Marius Coleman and Jeremiah Hamilton won their event, running 3:10.90. Ashton and Preston were also a part of last year's first-place squad at the Relays.
Jones holds the Penn Relays in high regard and believes these kinds of wins remind the athletes of who they can be on the track.
"It can be stressful at times but these wins validate the caliber of program that we are trying to become," he said.
The rest of the Salukis put together promising performances in various events at the Music City Challenge.
Daryl Okeke stood out in the qualifying and final rounds of the men's 110-meter hurdles. He ran 14.01 in the qualifying round, a mark that ranks ninth in school history. He followed it up with a 13.99 in the finals, finishing second and putting himself eighth in Saluki history.
Here are the athletes who achieved personal records on day two of the Music City Challenge:
