CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball dropped its series opener with Bradley, 7-3, Friday night at Itchy Jones Stadium. With the loss the Salukis fell to 27-23 on the season and 9-13 in Missouri Valley Conference action.
Bradley outhit Southern 9-7 in the game with six of the hits being extra-base hits. The Braves strung together four doubles in the game to go with two home runs while Southern had just three extra-base hits in the game.
After Bradley plated the first run of the game in the first inning, Nathan Bandy knotted the game up in the bottom half with a leadoff home run to left field – his third home run of the season. Southern took its first lead of the day in the second as Bandy singled to left field to bring home Mathieu Vallee who walked to lead off the frame.
That would be the only lead that Southern Illinois would hold though as Bradley came back to tie the game in the third before bringing home two more runs in the fourth inning to make it a 4-2 advantage for the road team. The Braves took advantage of a throwing error to plate the first run in the fourth before Jackson Chatterton hit a solo home run.
The Salukis would cut the lead to one run in the fifth following Steven Loden's sacrifice fly, but the Braves would go on to score runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings to secure the win.
Mike Hansell took the loss for SIU to fall to 3-5 on the year. The right-hander allowed four runs on five hits while striking out three. The Braves would push across two runs on Easton Dermody in relief before hitting Ben Riffe for a run in the ninth.
Jacob Kisting went five complete for the Braves to earn his first win of the year. He issued four walks and allowed three hits but was able to limit the damage to just three Saluki runs.
Bandy was the lone Saluki with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.
