CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball climbed back from a five-run deficit to defeat Bradley 12-6 Saturday afternoon at Itchy Jones Stadium. The Salukis evened the series with the Braves and improved to 28-23 overall and 10-13 in the Missouri Valley Conference with the victory.
Trailing Bradley 5-0 after four and a half innings, the Salukis would get the bats going in the bottom of the fifth when Steven Loden hit his second home run in as many days to put the Dawgs on the scoreboard.
That lit a fire in the squad and SIU would continue to apply pressure at the plate with two more runs in the sixth after Bennett Eltoft recorded a two-run pinch-hit home run to make it 5-3 Bradley.
Five hits led to five runs in the seventh, highlighted by a three-run home run from Eltoft – his second in as many at bats after entering as the DH in the sixth. All five of SIU's runs in the inning came with two outs on the scoreboard.
Hesston Gray put the finishing touches on the game with a grand slam in the eighth – his 10th home run of the season. Overall, SIU would spray 14 hits against Bradley's pitching staff, including five extra-base hits.
Jake Combs put together his most complete outing of the season on the mound after closing the game out for the Dawgs. The right-hander allowed only two hits and one run in five complete innings to improve to 2- on the season.
Al Holguin struck out two but allowed four runs in 2.2 innings in the start.
Bradley's Noah Edders went six full innings and retired five on strikeouts while allowing three runs in the no-decision. Brayden Marks (1-7) took the loss for the Braves after giving up five runs in the seventh.
Trey Cutchen led the Salukis with a 3-for-5 day at the plate while Hesston Gray, Loden and Eltoft picked up two hits each.
