CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois baseball claimed a series victory over Bradley Sunday afternoon after defeating the Braves, 12-4, at Itchy Jones Stadium on Senior Day.
All 15 seniors made appearances this weekend for the Salukis as SIU improved to 29-23 on the season. It was senior Cade Carter who made the spot start for the Dawgs on the mound – his first start in four seasons. The right-hander retired the Bradley side on three ground balls before exiting the game.
Bradley put up three runs in the first inning before Saluki hurler Aidan Foeller settled in to retire 10 straight Bradley hitters from the third to sixth innings. Foeller would get some help at the plate in the third as SIU put up four runs highlighted by Steven Loden's three-run home run to give the Salukis a 4-0 lead.
It was a pitcher's duel through the middle part of the game as Foeller and his Bradley counterpart each sat down hitters until the seventh.
The Braves would tie the game on a single to right field in the seventh after taking advantage of an error to extend the inning.
Southern's bats would come alive in the eighth though as the Salukis sent 11 batters to the plate and scored eight runs to put the game out of reach. SIU strung together nine hits to score the runs.
After a one-out single, Bradley starting pitcher Travis Lutz would be lifted from the game for Jack Stellan. Stellan went on to allow five consecutive base hits leading to five hits. Jake Allgeyer cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right before Jordan Bach ended the Saluki scoring with a two-run home run down the line in right.
Foeller finished his day with seven complete innings and striking out seven Braves hitters to earn the win and improve to 4-3.
The Salukis outhit Bradley 12-4 in the game and were led by Steven Loden who was 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs. Mathieu Vallee and Nathan Bandy each tallied two hits for the Dawgs.
