SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Southern Illinois baseball dropped game two of a three-game series with Missouri State, 7-5, Friday afternoon at Hammonds Field. Missouri State used a five-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead before the Salukis battled back late.
Both teams strung together nine hits each while Bennett Eltoft was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Salukis. Eltoft recorded four singles in the game, scoring twice and driving in a run for the Dawgs.
Saluki starting pitcher Mike Hansell did not allow a base hit to MSU until the fourth inning when the Bears hit back-to-back doubles to get on the scoreboard. SIU would go to the bullpen for Easton Dermody who would get out of the inning and hold the Bears to just one run. Justin Keuss made a superb play in left field crashing into the wall to save an extra-base hit and two more MSU runs.
Southern carried that defensive momentum to the fifth when it took advantage of a walk, hit, and an error to load the bases. Jake Allgeyer tied the game with an RBI groundout before the Bears were able to get out of the inning with a strikeout to leave the bases loaded.
Five runs came across for Missouri State in the fifth inning to give MSU a 6-1 lead. A walk and three consecutive singles put the Bears on top before Nick Rodriguez hit a three-run home run to cap off the inning for MSU.
The sixth inning was the best of the day offensively for the Salukis who tallied five hits in the frame. With two runners on, Eltoft drove in the first run with his third hit of the day on a single up the middle. Senior Cole Christman continued the rally as he doubled down the line in left to bring in two more Salukis before Keuss singled in the fourth run of the inning.
The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh when Caden Bogenpohl hit a solo home run to push the lead to 7-5 and never looked back as Tyler Charlton pitched a clean sheet in the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.
Hansell pitched 3.1 innings and gave up just one run on two hits in the no-decision. Dermody (4-2) was hit with the loss as the Bears scored four runs in two-thirds of an inning on the righty. Anthony Pron allowed two runs over three innings in relief. He struck out four batters and did not issue a free pass.
MSU's Kaleb Thomas went the minimum to improve to 4-3 on the year. He struck out four and issued three walks over five innings.
