Preview | Southern Illinois to compete in four NCAA Regionals events Wednesday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois track and field will send 8 athletes to compete in four events at the NCAA West Regional round of the outdoor track and field championships Wednesday, May 22, in Fayetteville, Ark.
The championships last four days, Wednesday, May 22 through Saturday, May 25, rotating between men's and women's competitions each day.
Wednesday will feature men's competitions, with Southern's Shane Ashton and Nikyan Hodge competing in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Ashton put together the 28th-best time in the nation with his season-best 50.37 at the MVC Championships in the men's 400-meter hurdles, securing a gold medal. Hodge joins him after setting his season-best time of 51.95, a time that slotted him right behind Ashton for the silver medal in Terre Haute.
Darius Fuller will represent the Salukis in the triple jump on Friday after qualifying with a 15.30-meter mark at the MVC Championships which won him a gold medal. He ranks 88th nationally.
The men's 4x400 wraps up day three's action, and Ashton, Jeremiah Hamilton, Xavier Preston and Bryson Wilson will look to continue their hot stretch in the spring. Hodge and Marius Coleman will travel as alternates. Their time of 3:08.25 at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational ranks 98th nationally.
Rachel Anderson has impressed in the 3000-meter steeplechase all outdoor season and will get a chance to prove herself nationally on Saturday. She qualified for the 3000-meter steeplechase after running 10.00.70 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 11, a time that ranks 17th nationally.
