News | Southern Illinois men picked fourth, women picked seventh in Pre-Championship Poll

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Valley Conference league coaches have picked the Southern Illinois men's track and field team to finish fourth and the women to finish seventh in the 2024 MVC Outdoor Track and Field Pre-Championship poll, the conference announced Monday.
Indiana State was picked to finish first in both the men's and women's polls, receiving all 10 first-place votes on the men's side, and nine of the 12 for the women.
The SIU men received 68 total points after finishing fourth in the outdoor championships last season.
On the track, Xavier Preston holds the fastest 100-meter time in the conference, running 10.38 at the USF Bulls Alumni Invitational.
The Salukis hold four of the top 10 times in the 200, and three of the top 10 in the 400-meter dash.
Ethan Senti leads the distance runners, running the fifth fastest time in the 5000-meter at 14:01.29.
The Salukis are also featured prominently in the hurdles, with freshman Daryl Okeke leading the way with a 13.99 in the 110-meter. Shane Ashton and Nikoby Johnson rank third and fourth in The Valley in the 400-meter hurdles.
The relays have been an event to watch all season, with the 4x100 and 400 squads both running the second-fastest times in the conference.
Grant Spicer, Christian Coleman and Jadon Robertson hold three of the top six high jumps.
Darrione Williams, Darius Fuller, Dasani Edward and Caleb Carter litter the top 10 in the long and triple jumps.
Dallas Hodge leads a young and hungry team of throwers.
The women of Southern Illinois received 78 points in the poll after finishing fifth in last year's championships.
Shavell Riley, Leah Thames and Keyann Wilson lead the women's sprinters with multiple top 10 times in the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes.
Ansley Bailey and Brianna Nieset have the tenth-fastest times in the 800 and 1500-meter runs.
Rachel Anderson continues to show why she is one of the best distance runners in the country, leading The Valley with the fastest time in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
The 4x400 relay team of Vashti Grey, Thames, Selisa Palmer and Teanna Bell are second in The Valley after their victory at the Penn Relays.
Christine Nosike's discus throw of 51.03 meters ranks second in the conference.
