CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois needed some walk-off magic on Tuesday night to secure the season-sweep of SIU Edwardsville in an 8-7 victory over the Cougars at Itchy Jones Stadium.
After the Cougars scored two runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game at seven apiece it was Trey Cutchen who led off the ninth with a double to the gap in left to put the pressure on. Justin Keuss moved Cutchen to third base on a groundout before leadoff man Nathan Bandy who recorded the fly ball to centerfield for the sacrifice fly and to bring in Cutchen for the win.
SIU Edwardsville jumped out to an early lead after sending a solo home run out to left field in the opening frame before the Salukis sent all nine batters to the plate in the bottom half.
Outfielder Mathieu Vallee drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game before the Salukis took advantage of an errant throw to first that plated three more runs.
Bandy led off the second with his second home run of the season before Steven Loden connected on his team-leading 10th home run of the season in the fourth to extend the Southern Illinois lead to 6-1.
After Edwardsville picked up in a run in the sixth, the Salukis loaded the bases once again in the bottom half and Hesston Gray worked a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 7-2. The Cougars would bring seven batters to the plate in the seventh and capitalize on two walks and a single to bring across three runs and pull within two runs at 7-5.
Saluki starter Ben Riffe pitched two innings in his third start of the year. He allowed one run on one hit – the home run in the first inning. Right-hander Jake Combs went three complete and allowed only two hits while striking out a pair of Cougars. Anthony Pron was credited with the win to move to 2-2 on the season.
Matthew Gist allowed five runs – only two of which were earned – on five hits in 1.1 innings. The lefty issued three walks and did not record a strikeout in the start. Alex Rodriguez was hit with the loss to move to 3-3 on the season.
SIU outhit the Cougars 10-9 in the game and took advantage of four miscues in the field.
