CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (3-13 overall, 1-6 conference) took the loss on Friday against Northern Iowa, falling by a final score of 84-59.
Southern Illinois trailed, 37-31, at the half, but was out-scored, 22-13, in the third quarter and 25-15 in the fourth, leading to the result.
"Overall, I didn't like our poise in the third quarter," head coach Kelly Bond-White said. "We just have to find a way to find the open players a little bit better and then execute on offense."
The Salukis shot 30% from the field, 21% from deep, and 79% from the free throw line in the loss. UNI out-rebounded SIU, 44-40, and had 42 points in the paint as opposed to Southern's 24.
Gift Uchenna paced the Salukis in the loss with 17 points and 13 rebounds, her 11th double-double on the year.
Northern Iowa was dominant in the first quarter, out-scoring SIU, 26-14, on a field-goal percentage of 56.3% and three-point percentage of 42.9%. The Panthers were also a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line.
The visitors had five offensive rebounds in the quarter, leading to five second chance points.
Southern's best quarter of the game came in the second. It out-scored Northern Iowa, 17-11, and shot 44.4% from the field. The Salukis held the Panthers to a field-goal percentage of 27.8% and 0-of-5 three-point shooting in the quarter.
With Uchenna's 17 points and eight rebounds leading the way, SIU was able to cut the halftime deficit to 37-31. The junior did not score again after the halftime break.
UNI got back on track in the third, out-scoring SIU, 22-13. The Panthers limited Southern to 20% shooting from the field and 0-of-5 shooting from deep.
In the fourth, Northern Iowa secured the victory with lights out shooting, scoring 25 points on 60% shooting from the field and from deep. SIU shot 3-of-6 from beyond the arc in the final quarter, with Isabella Palmqvist hitting two three pointers and Kayla Cooper hitting one.
With the 84-59 loss, SIU falls to 3-13 overall and 1-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Palmqvist was the only Saluki besides Uchenna to score in double figures, finishing the game with 10 points and three rebounds.
The Salukis wll remain at home for a Sunday tilt against Drake at 2 p.m. at the Banterra Center.
