CARBONDALE, Ill. – Weekly awards keep piling up from the Missouri Valley Conference for SIU swim and dive. On Tuesday, the conference announced that Olivia Herron and Willem Huggins were named the Women's and Men's Swimmer of the Week for their performances at the Mizzou Invite last week.
Herron walked away with three individual wins at the invite (100-breaststroke, 200-breaststroke, and 200-IM) while also scoring a podium as part of the 200-medley relay team. Herron also set three new school records, doing so in the 400-IM and 200-breaststroke twice. She also set personal bests in the 200-breaststroke and 400-IM. Currently, Herron sit 13th nationally in the 200-breaststroke and 21st in the 100-breaststroke.
"Olivia had a great meet at the Mizzou Invite as she continues to improve on her second team All-American time in her best event," says head coach Geoff Hanson. "Her performance from the past weekend guarantees her a return trip to the NCAA Championship in March."
As for Huggins, the sophomore pulled out a podium in the 100-backstroke and three podiums as part of the 400-medley, 200-medley, and 400-freestyle relay teams. Huggins also set five personal bests in the 50-freestyle, 200-freestyle, 50-backstroke, 100-backstroke, and 200-backstroke. In the MVC, the Carbondale local sits atop the leaderboards for the 100-backstroke, 200-backstroke, and 200-freestlye. Additionally, Huggins set conference records for the 200-backstroke and 200-freestlye.
"Willem had a major breakthrough meet last weekend, notching 100% lifetime bests in everything he swam individually and on relays," says Coach Hanson. "He has big goals this season and this meet was a huge step towards accomplishing them."
Herron has now been named Swimmer of the Week four times this season while Huggins brings home the title for the first time in his career.
Swim and dive is back in action on January 9 when the men's team visits Purdue.
