MOBILE, Ala. – Southern Illinois Men's Golf finished the Hal Williams Collegiate on Tuesday, placing seventh out of 13 teams. They finished with a score of 843 (-9), 16 strokes behind the tournament champion SMU.
Head coach Justin Fetcho gave his thoughts on the Salukis' first tournament of the spring.
"We are striving for more but overall, a solid week, we are learning and growing, and I think this week was a big step forward for us," Fetcho said. "If you look at the stats, we made the fewest bogeys in the field this week which has been a big point of emphasis for us, so it was great to see that hard work pay off."
Anthony De Schutter picked up where he left off in the fall semester tying for third with a score of 204 (-9). De Schutter was dominant in all three rounds, shooting under par. Round two was his best of the tournament, where he shot 65 (-6). That score puts him in a tie for fifth place for the best 18-hole score in school history.
Justin Fetcho offered his thoughts on De Schutter.
"A great performance by Anthony this week, he didn't make a single bogey on par 4 or 5 this week which is a tremendous accomplishment," Fetcho said. "He played three straight rounds under par and is continuing to learn the discipline and attitude needed to keep progressing throughout the spring, it will be fun to keep seeing his growth this spring."
Lucas Lasley also put together a strong performance for the Salukis, tying for 28th with a score of 212 (-1). Lasley finished rounds one and two shooting 69 (-2), and a round three score of 74 (+3).
