
Recap | SIU Swept on Final Day of San Marcos Classic

San Marcos, Texas – Southern Illinois softball (1-12) wrapped up its trip to the San Marcos Classic on Monday with games versus Kansas and Texas State. Kansas defeated SIU, 2-1, in extra innings while Texas State defeated the Salukis, 13-0, in five innings.
Game One: 2-1 L vs Kansas

How It Happened
Thanks to some strong pitching from Emma Gipson, McKenzie Newcomb, and their Jayhawk counterpart, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when the Salukis finally broke through. Emily Williams walked to reach first before Coburn pinch-ran for her. Anna Carder then reached on an error from Kansas' shortstop and Coburn was able to round the bases to score and give SIU a 1-0 lead.
It took Kansas until its final out to find an equalizer. In the top of the seventh with two outs and a runner on second, the Jayhawk batter doubled over the glove of Jackie Lis to bring the runner home and tie the game at 1-1.
Kansas took their first lead of the day in the top of eighth. A double up the middle scored the automatic runner at second, giving the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead.
Game Two: 13-0 L vs Texas State (5 inn.)

How It Happened
Following a quiet first inning from both offenses, Texas State grabbed a big lead in the bottom of the second. With the bags loaded, an error in the outfield allowed one Bobcat to cross homeplate. That was followed up with an RBI single to make it 2-0 in favor of Texas State.
The Bobcats went on to score six more runs in the inning, taking an 8-0 lead into the third. After holding SIU scoreless in the top part of both the third and fourth innings, Texas State piled up five more runs to lead, 13-0.
With Southern unable to score in the fifth, the game ended with the final score being 13-0.
Up Next
Softball now prepares to host its first home series of the year when it begins the Coach B. Classic on Friday. The Salukis' first game will be against Central Arkansas at 4 p.m.

- Mikaela Coburn scored the lone run for the Salukis.
