AUBURN, Ala. – Southern Illinois softball (0-4, 0-0) suited up for the second day of the Tiger Invitational Saturday afternoon, taking on Auburn (4-0, 0-0) and North Carolina (3-1, 0-0). After game one turned into a offensive slugfest won 9-7 by Auburn, SIU's offense was shut down by North Carolina to end the day with a 3-0 loss.
Game One: 9-7 L vs Auburn
Inside the Box Score
How It Happened
Auburn plated one run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, but starter Kaytee Dahlstrom dialed in and kept Auburn off the board until the third inning when the Tigers plated another three runs to take a commanding four-run lead.
The Salukis' offense was quiet until the top of the fifth. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Blomenkamp reached on an error to load the bags with no one out. Haley Wilkerson then walked to drive one run in, making it 4-1. After an Auburn pitching change, Carder singled to left field to plate two more runs and bring SIU within one. Following a Baker walk that once again loaded the bases, Lee powered a ball past the left field wall to score four and put Southern on top, 7-4.
After a scoreless bottom of the fifth and top of the sixth, Auburn had a massive inning of their own in the bottom half of inning six. With two runners on, the Tigers launched a home run off McKenzie Newcomb to tie the game at 7-7. That home run was followed up by a solo shot to regive Auburn the lead. A third consecutive home run was then hit to give the Tigers an insurance run, setting the score at 9-7.
Despite the first two Saluki hitters reaching in the seventh, Auburn recorded three straight outs to end any hope of a Southern comeback, finalizing the score at 9-7 in the Tigers' favor.
Game Two: 3-0 L vs North Carolina
Inside the Box Score
How It Happened
The late game for the day was a pitcher's duel for the first 4.5 innings, with neither Gipson nor her North Carolina counterpart giving up any runs. Gipson also carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth.
Unfortunately, that is where North Carolina's offense started to find their groove. With one runner on, the Tar Heels used a double to take a 1-0 lead. That was followed up by a single that scored another North Carolina run. Finally, one more Tar Heel single drove in a third run, giving North Carolina a 3-0 lead.
After a quiet top of the sixth, SIU made a little noise with two outs in the seventh. Wilkerson singled to reach base before Carder walked to bring the tying run to the plate. That was as far as the comeback attempt made it though, as a pop-out ended the game with the scoreboard reading 3-0 in favor of North Carolina.
Up Next
The Tiger Invitational concludes tomorrow, Sunday, with one game against Appalachian State. First pitch is set for 9 a.m.
