CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois softball (13-14, 5-0) ended their 14-game homestand on Wednesday when they hosted Missouri State (4-21, 3-2). SIU's offense and strong pitching propelled the team to a 9-2 victory and their eighth straight win.
"After last night, it was kind of like hanging on a little bit," said head coach Jen Sewell. "I was just super impressed we did very consistent throughout the whole game and did not panic."
Inside the Box Score
How It Happened
SIU grabbed the first lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning. With Jackie Lis on second, Erin Lee singled down the right-field line to bring Lis in and give SIU a 1-0 lead.
Missouri State wasted little time evening up the game. In the second, a pair of wild pitches from Southern starter McDowell advanced a Missouri State runner to third, and a triple was more than enough to score the runner, tying the game at one run apiece.
The Salukis retook the lead in the bottom half of the second. With Coburn on second and Amanda Knutson on first, Grann, the walkoff hero from the previous game, knocked a ball into left field to plate Coburn and give SIU a 2-1 lead.
Following a scoreless third, Southern tacked on another run in the fourth. As runners stood on first and second, Lis doubled down the right-field line to drive Grann in and make it 3-1.
The floodgates opened in the fifth inning. First, Emily Williams led the inning off with a solo homerun. Then, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bags for Carder, who launched a 3-1 pitch over the left-field wall for a grand slam, upping SIU's lead to 8-1.
The Bears grabbed a run back in the sixth inning. With runners on the corners, a double to right field scored one run and made it 8-2.
Addi Baker snagged that run back for SIU when she led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, making it 9-2.
Emma Gipson shut things down in the circle in the seventh inning, securing the 9-2 win for Southern.
