
Recap | Softball Walks Off Purdue, Falls to Central Arkansas in Extra Innings on Saturday

CARBONDALE, Ill. - On day two of the Coach B. Classic, the Southern Illinois University softball team (3-13, 0-0) split its two games on Saturday, losing to Central Arkansas, 10-7, in eight innings and defeating Purdue, 5-4, in eight innings as well.
"I think we survived the first inning [vs. Purdue] and didn't get too hard on ourselves, and then we were able to figure it out as the game went along," head coach Jen Sewell said. "That's probably, defensively, the best that we've played. Then we just played our way back into the ballgame."
Game One: 10-7 loss (8) vs. Central Arkansas

The Bears out-hit the Salukis, 13-11, while the hosts also made three errors.Â

Four different Salukis had two hits in the game. Both Jackie Lis and Alexis Rudd went 2-4 with home runs in the loss. Lis' home run was her fifth of the season, while Rudd's was her first.Â

Emma Austin and Erin Lee joined Lis and Rudd with two hits against the Bears.

Three different pitchers appeared for SIU, with Kaytee Dahlstrom going the deepest in the game with 5.1 innings pitched, eight hits, five runs (four earned), no walks, and four strikeouts. Â
How it Happened
The bats got going early for Southern Illinois, scoring in each of the opening three innings. Its biggest offensive output came in the third, where it scored three runs after scoring one in both the first and second innings.Â
Lis' home run got things started in the third, hitting a solo home run with one out in the inning. After Emily Williams walked, Rudd hit a two-run shot to right center to give the Salukis a 5-0 lead.
The Bears got going offensively in the fifth, scoring five runs to tie the game at 5-5. Southern answered in the bottom half, tallying two runs off of an Erin Lee double to take the 7-5 lead.
After tying the game in the seventh, Central Arkansas went on to score three runs in the eighth and held SIU scoreless to win by a final score of 10-7.
Game Two: 5-4 win (8) vs. Purdue

Purdue out-hit SIU, 8-7, but did not score in the final three innings of the game.

McKenzie Newcomb (3-5) picked up the win after pitching a full eight innings. Newcomb gave up eight hits, four runs (three earned), three walks, and had six strikeouts.Â

Emma Austin stayed hot, going 2-4 with one run scored. Anna Carder went 1-3 with a double and two RBI, while Jackie Lis went 1-2 with an RBI and two walks.
How it Happened
Purdue got on the board in the first after hitting a two-run shot to take a 3-0 lead.Â
Lis singled in the bottom of the third to bring home Maleah Blomenkamp to make it 3-1. Emma Austin was thrown out at home on the same play to end the inning.
The Boilermakers added one to their lead in the top of the fifth, but the Salukis fired back, scoring two runs off of an Anna Carder double to bring it back to a one-run game.
One inning later, Blomenkamp hit a sacrifice fly to score Amanda Knutson and tie the game at 4-4.
Newcomb was dominant down the stretch, holding the Boilermakers off of the scoreboard in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
With Kiana McDowell pinch running, the Salukis scored the game-winning run during a Knutson at bat off of an error to defeat Purdue, 5-4.

The Salukis will conclude the Coach B. Classic with two games on Sunday. The first will be a rematch vs. Purdue at 1:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne at 4 p.m.
