CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University women's basketball team (4-24 overall, 2-17 conference) took the loss on Thursday against Bradley, losing by a final score of 59-51.
It was a battle of the defenses at the Banterra Center, as neither team crossed the 60-point plateau. Bradley shot 43.5% from the field, 16.7% (2-of-12) from three-point range, and 68.0% at the free throw line, but held Southern to 30.0% field-goal shooting and 21.4% (3-of-14) three-point shooting.
The Salukis were out-rebounded, 40-35, and allowed 34 points in the paint as opposed to having 28 of their own on the other end. SIU forced 17 turnovers and had 12 in the loss.
Bradley led for 37 minutes, while Southern Illinois led just once in the game.
A hot start for the Braves put the Salukis in a hole early, as they were out-scored by the visitors, 21-11, in the opening 10 minutes. Bradley shot 62.5% from the field during the first quarter.
Both teams traded low offensive numbers in the second and third quarters, as Bradley was held to six points in the second quarter, but SIU was then held to seven points in the third.
After attempting just four free throws in the first 30 minutes, the Braves got to the charity stripe early and often in the fourth. Bradley went 15-of-21 at the free throw line in the final 10 minutes to secure the victory.
Isabella Palmqvist paced the Salukis with 15 points, while Gift Uchenna had 10 points and 10 rebounds, her 19th double-double on the year.
The Salukis will conclude the regular season at home on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Illinois State on Senior Day.
