Recap | Salukis Defeat Bradley 9-3, Sweep Series
04/13/2025 | 3:30:00 | Softball
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois softball (25-15, 16-1) hosted Bradley (18-24, 7-10) Sunday afternoon for the finale of their three-game series. With SIU looking to sweep the Braves, the Salukis overcame several deficits to pull away with a 9-3 win and the series sweep.
"It speaks to how much our players are willing to let the win come to them," said head coach Jen Sewell. "We have really clicked together lately as a roster. And they have allowed us to challenge them and they respond. It it not easy to wear this jersey; these players are gritty and gutsy and they have to be prepared to take everyone's best shot. They are willing to fail and come back for more and learn from it. Sweeps look easy on paper but they are never easy. Sweeps take not just physical preparedness but they require everything a team has mentally. Super impressed by this sweep."

How It Happened
Bradley wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the first, runners stood in the corners. Abbott Badgley hit into a fielder's choice at third, but the runner from third barely beat Anna Carder's tag at home to score, making it 1-0 Bradley.
The Braves tacked another run on in the top of the third. Lauren DeRolf reached on an error to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then advanced to third on a passed ball. She scored on an RBI single up the middle, increasing Bradley's lead to 2-0.
Southern's offense made some noise in the bottom of the third. With the bases full, Erin Lee drew a walk to plate a run, cutting the deficit in half. Sage Grann then walked, pushing the tying run across home plate. That was all the runs SIU would score, sending the game to the fourth tied 2-2.
In the top of the fifth, Bradley retook the lead, 3-2, thanks to a solo homer hit by Ashley Breeding. However, that lead did not last even a half inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Williams hit a home with Carder and Jackie Lis on the basepath to put SIU up 5-3. The Salukis then loaded the bases before Austin hit an infield single to plate another run.
Southern added three insurance runs in the sixth inning. As Salukis filled the bases, a wild pitch allowed Carder to score. Then, two outs later, Amanda Knutson walked to drive another run in before Austin singled to grab another SIU run, making it 9-3.
Despite the first two batters reaching to start Bradley's half of the seventh, Newcomb shut down the next three batters to secure Southern's 9-3 win and the series sweep.
Up Next
Southern will be back in action on Friday, April 18, when they travel to Northern Iowa for a 5 p.m. game and the start of a three-game series.
