CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Southern Illinois Track and Field enjoyed a beautiful day at the Fighting Illini Twilight on Saturday.
Darrione Williams is getting into championship form, setting his season's best jump length and finishing in second place. On his last jump of the day, sitting in third place. Williams leaped and overtook second place with a jump of 7.37m (24'-2.25"). This mark puts him in first place in the Valley.
"A strong series with three jumps between 7.10-7.20, a big foul, and a 7.37m final round effort," said jumps coach Jacob Brydson. "With how last week ended with a scary slip, to come back and jump his best mark of the season, indoors and outdoors, was quite remarkable. In what wasn't the best conditions, as well."
Na'Kyrah Cooks picked up a second-place finish of her own in the long jump event. She had a jump length of 5.78m, only .18m behind the leader. This is her best mark of the outdoor season.
"A centimeter foul at the board was the difference between her having what was most likely a new personal best and what she ended up having as her best mark," said Brydson. "5.78m for the third meet this outdoor season is a consolation prize, but today showed how much more is right there."
Elise Green picked up a second-place finish in the shot-put event, with a throw distance of 13.35m. This mark is her best mark in the outdoor season.
Christian Coleman finished in third place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.38 seconds, setting his personal best time in the event. Coleman finished only behind Olympians Heath Baldwin and Ayden Owens-Delerme.
"Efforts have gone towards cleaning up the second half of his race, and the past two weekends have shown those have not been in vain on his part," said Brydson. "With a few more weeks now to try and ramp up the rhythm between hurdles even more, there's some excitement about what he can do."
Jalynn Wood picked up a third-place finish in the javelin throw, with a throw of 33.96m (111' 5")
