LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southern Illinois Track and Field team finished the regular season strong at the Jim Green Invitational on Saturday, May 3.
"This was our last regular season meet before conference," said Director of Track and Field, Richard Jones. "The weather wasn't in our favor this weekend, but the athletes were able to preserve and still do some good things amongst some top Power 5 programs. Several athletes had PRs in their respective events and finished at the top of other events. It shows we are tuning up and ready to compete at the conference meet."
TRACK
Shane Ashton raced to a first-place finish in the 400M Hurdles with a time of 51.90 seconds. This mark sets a season-best time and improves his Valley leading time in the 400M Hurdles. Ashton will look to defend his Valley title heading into the MVC Championship.
Christian Coleman claimed second place in the 110M Hurdles with a time of 14.35 seconds. Coleman won his qualifier earlier in the day with a time of 14.21 seconds. That time sets a personal best and moves Coleman into second place in the Valley.
"His time today was paradoxically both expected and unexpected," Jumps coach Jacob Brydson said. "Expected because he's been hurdling at a high level these past few weeks and his practices show he's ready to run times competitively for conference medals and regional spots. Unexpected because it was 55 and raining harder than the Prince Super Bowl halftime show. He's been consistent in all types of conditions and coming into form.
The men's 4x400M Relay team closed out the event, taking second place with a time of 3:12.75. The team was comprised of Shane Ashton, Xavier Preston, Josh Delgado, and Andre Jackson II.
Andre Jackson added more hardware to his trophy case with a third-place finish in the 400M dash with a time of 47.04 seconds. Jackson currently sits in first place in the Valley in the 400M dash, and third in the 200M dash.
FIELD
Darrione Williams continues to outdo himself by winning the long jump event with a jump distance of 7.43M (24'-4.5"). William's mark sets his season's best mark and expanded his lead atop the Valley Leaderboard heading into the MVC Championship.
"He's been sick for a few days, which makes the marks from this weekend even more impressive," Brydson said. "He was struggling with his aggressiveness on the takeoff after the fourth round, so the cue was "try and foul a 7.60 on this next one." I need to choose my phrasing better on the next one because it was exactly that, but that switched up his demeanor for his sixth-round jump, which ended up being his best so far this season."
Darius Fuller joined the fun and took home a win of his own in the triple jump event with a jump distance of 13.89M (45'-7"). Fuller currently sits in fourth place on the Valley Leaderboard and will look to defend his crown heading into the MVC Championship.
Adrian Przestrzelski joined Fuller on the podium with a third-place finish. He had a jump distance of 13.29M (43'-7.25"). Adrian sits one spot behind Fuller on the Valley Leaderboard.
