CARBONDALE, Ill. – It was another busy week in the world of Saluki athletes. Soccer finished up a long roadtrip with a pair of wins, volleyball hosted a tournament, and football played a Big 10 opponent. Then, this week, another fall team begins their season.
Soccer (6-1-0, 0-0-0)
Soccer concluded their five-game roadtrip this week with two more away contests.
First was a 3-2 win over SIUE on Thursday. Dory Latenser, Dior Knorr, and Nao Katamoto provided goals for the Salukis, while Dana Nadda and Londyn Soto added assists. In goal, Lily Murray made four saves against two goals allowed.
The roadtrip wrapped up on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Lindenwood. Aylie Haycock scored the only goal in the game while Knorr and Sophia Schlicklin assisted on the goal. In net, Murray made seven saves to snag a shutout.
The Salukis now return home for the first time since August 21 when they host Chicago State on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m. UT-Martin then comes to Carbondale on Sunday, Sept. 14, for a 6 p.m. match.
Volleyball (3-3, 0-0)
Southern volleyball hosted the Saluki bash where they went 1-2.
First, the squad lost to New Mexico State, 3-2, on Friday. Kelly Franklin led the team in kills with 15 and Addison Kerr dished out a game-high 27 assists. On the defensive end, Jillian Shaneyfelt picked up 21 digs.
SIU then won later on Friday, sweeping Kansas City, 3-0. This time, Annabelle Sulish led the team, and game, in kills with 16. Meanwhile, Emma Lade pumped out 19 assists. Shaneyfelt had another 14 digs while Cecilia Bulmahn was also in double-digits with 10.
The bash ended on Saturday when Southern fell to Eastern Illinois, 3-2. Larissa Seger took the lead in kills with 15 while Lade provided 29 assists. Four players had 10+ digs, with Shaneyfelt leading the way with 24.
Now, volleyball prepares for a trip to Michigan this weekend and the Golden Grizzly Invite. First up is Oakland on Friday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m. They then play Eastern Michigan later that day at 4 p.m. Their trip wraps on Saturday, Sept. 13, with a 11 a.m. game versus Xavier.
Football (1-1, 0-0)
Football had a major test this Saturday when they traveled to Purdue and lost to the Boilermakers, 34-17. Quarterback DJ Williams went 20-33 for 202 yards, a passing touchdown, and he rushed for a score as well. Williams also led the team in rushing yards with 45. On the receiving end, Ryan Schwendeman reeled in a touchdown while Fabian McCray had 72 receiving yards. Defensively, Vinny Pierre Jr. had an interception.
The Salukis remain on the road this weekend when they travel to UT-Martin on Saturday, Sept. 13, for a 6 p.m. showdown.
Men's Golf
The men's golf fall season kicks off later today, September 8, at the Wildcat Invitational, in Manhattan, Kansas. The tournament runs through tomorrow, September 9.
