CARBONDALE, Ill. – Christmas Break is over for Southern Illinois athletics. After having last week off, both basketball teams returned to action Monday night and picked up Missouri Valley Conference losses.
Men's Basketball (6-8, 0-3)
Men's basketball returned from Christmas Break with an 84-81 loss to Murray State on Monday. Five Salukis scored 10+ points as Prince Aligbe led the way with 19 points; Aligbe came just one rebound short of a double-double.
The squad is back in action twice this week. On Thursday, Jan. 1, the Salukis open the new year with a 2 p.m. home game against Valparaiso. They then travel to Nashville for a 4 p.m. game at Belmont on Sunday, Jan. 4.
Women's Basketball (3-8, 0-2)
Women's basketball also resumed play following Christmas, losing to Belmont on Monday, 68-56. Alayna Kraus led the Salukis in points with 20, and Kayla Cooper joined her in double-digits with 10. Tkiyah Nelson and Kynnedi Davis both dished out four assists, while Indya Green snagged seven rebounds.
Southern now hits the road for a prolonged road trip to Iowa. On Friday, Jan. 2, they visit Drake at 6 p.m. SIU then travels to UNI on Sunday, Jan. 4, for a 2 p.m. match.
