Saluki Soccer Ties Program Record With Fourth Straight Win

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois women's soccer team tied a program record with its fourth consecutive victory Thursday night, defeating SIUE 1-0 to remain unbeaten at home.
"Outstanding defensive performance from the team," Head Coach Graeme Orr said. "The back five were excellent again and another clean sheet gives you the platform to win football matches."
The Salukis improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 at home while recording their fourth consecutive shutout. Southern has held opponents scoreless throughout its current winning streak, which includes victories over Alabama A&M, Lindenwood, Chicago State and SIUE.
Both teams were scoreless through the opening 45 minutes. Nao Katamoto and Kayla Grain each put a shot on goal, while Victoria Hassan struck the crossbar late in the half. SIUE held a 4-3 advantage in shots at the break.
Southern broke through in the 55th minute when Michelle Betancourt scored her first goal of the season. Grain and Hassan were credited with assists on the winner.
"The goal was a lovely combination," Orr said. "We knew that was an area where we could exploit the space, and it was executed really well."
Reagan Miller helped protect the lead with four saves, all in the second half, while playing the full 90 minutes in goal. Two of those stops came against Claire Nieroda in the final 15 minutes.
SIUE finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Betancourt and Grain led Southern with two shots apiece. The Cougars fell to 2-2-3.
"I thought it was a proper battle from start to finish," Orr said of Thursday's contest. "Credit to the players — they stood up to it, defended brilliantly and got the result. Now we recover, reset and go again on Sunday."
The Salukis travel to UT Martin on Sunday, Sept. 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Martin, Tenn.
